Valentine’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate love and the quality of relationships.
I wonder what would happen if we did the same
thing at work, sending cards or flowers to colleagues with whom we feel
particular affinity and affection. Would
this highlight how much relationships make the world go around, or would it
make people feel uncomfortable? Or both,
perhaps?
The quality of relationships we have at work is
one measure of the health of the climate within which we work and therefore of
the organisation itself. Certainly, in my experience, we benefit from having
trusting, open, balanced working relationships at work, helping to make our
efforts feel like a labour of love rather than a source of stress. Over the years I have learned to value more
and more highly those colleagues who contribute most to this climate, making
work a warmer and more emotionally rewarding experience for themselves and
others. They add love to the work
environment, which seems to draw out the same from others. Happy Valentine’s Day to all of the work
warmers out there.
